Guest Artist - Mike Cheetham
Mike is a young 80 years old and lives, in Hurstpierpoint. After painting in a variety of media for more than 25 years, he took up stone-carving again. He had made several sculptures some years before after attending a short course with Helen-Mary Skelton at Streat. Her late father was the well-known professional sculptor John Skelton.
He has been attending the Skelton Studios’ courses ever since and, together with production of sculptures in his own workshop, Mike has accumulated enough work to exhibit, and this opportunity by the Shoreham Gallery will be just his second exhibition, apart from Open Studios in Hurstpierpoint and Ditchling.
His style initially was figurative items, but he soon decided that abstracts were preferred, sometimes influenced by the styles of other artists, especially Barbara Hepworth, but usually he chooses unusual shapes and varieties of stone and just “sees what emerges“.
