Along the Adur to the sea

I’m a printmaker and illustrator who has lived in Shoreham for the past thirty years. It’s a great place to explore and be inspired by the local natural environment of the river, downs and coast but also its history and the community living here.
Drawing is always my starting point as it helps me study and understand the world around me. So you’ll often see me out and about with sketchbooks and ink pens.
Although I do plan out ideas things change when I make prints, especially when I carve into blocks and experiment with colour. I like that surprise element. Over the past couple of years I’ve also been painting more using an assortment of implements like feathers, teasels and card off-cuts as well as brushes to make expressive marks which is liberating.
My work on show at the gallery is all connected to Shoreham and the river Adur – the different birds that visit, activities of people in and on the water, plus special places unique to Shoreham. There are lino prints, monoprints, paintings and wood engravings. Some brand new pieces and some you maybe familiar with.
I’ve been lucky to have worked in the creative arts throughout my life as an artist, illustrator and educator. I studied at St Albans school of Art. Canterbury College of Art and Brighton University and have undertaken a wide range of commissions from cover designs, posters, greeting cards, jigsaw puzzles and educational materials, to large scale murals, banners, maps and way-finding monoliths. Over many years I have also taught on a variety of courses, run printmaking workshops and community projects with adults and children of all ages enjoying helping to inspire others in their own creative endeavours.
