Textile artist and illustrator Lesley Buckingham works under the name Betty Bib, joins the gallery this month as our guest artist creating enchanting fairy books, while also producing published work for magazines and advertising. Her clients have included the National Trust, Country Living and the Financial Times. Trained in embroidered textiles, Lesley has always been fascinated by detail and the miniature.
Her recent work celebrates the magic of nature and the little folk imagined within it, offering humour, delight and a gentle invitation to reconnect with the inner child. Her finely dressed fairies and dolls are made from hand-dyed fabrics, often decorated with flowers from her garden and treasures from her extensive haberdashery collection. Combining hand and machine embroidery, painting and sewing, Lesley creates collectible characters that bring joy, texture and a little magic to everyday life.

I trained at Goldsmiths College London in 1990 and since then my practice has been based in several east London studios.
My early influences stem from an interest in folk art, fantasy, myth and magic.
This is reflected in my desire to create interesting creatures with a personality and perhaps a story to tell. Drawing is the tool that helps me to explore and winkle out these little characters which can emerge from anywhere but mostly from the objects around me.I hand build using slabs of clay and occasional moulds. Most of my work is fired to earthenware in an electric kiln or in a Raku kiln.
