at Shoreham Art Gallery
There is always something new to discover at Shoreham Art Gallery, where a steady stream of fresh and inspiring work keeps visitors coming back time and again. The main gallery is a beautifully light and welcoming space, perfect for browsing at a relaxed pace, while outside an exquisite sculpture garden offers a tranquil spot to pause and reflect. Upstairs, a smaller, more intimate gallery provides yet another layer of artistic interest, making every visit feel like a true experience.
What makes the gallery particularly special is its team of exhibiting artists, who take turns to staff the space seven days a week. Warm, knowledgeable and always happy to chat, they create a friendly, unpretentious atmosphere where visitors can learn more about the work and the creative process behind it.
Anne Barrell
This month, the gallery is delighted to welcome guest ceramicist Anne Barrell. Her distinctive pieces are deeply inspired by the sea, featuring merchant ships, sailing boats and fishing vessels, all reflecting Britain’s rich maritime heritage. Drawing on both historical influences and modern British art, Anne uses the traditional technique of sgraffito, delicately scratching her designs into layers of coloured earthenware clay. The result is a collection full of character, texture and storytelling.
Jen Green
Among the gallery’s resident artists is Sussex-based Jen Green, whose prints, paintings and drawings are inspired by the landscapes and wildlife of the South Downs, where she lives in the charming village of Fulking. Known for her linocuts, Jen has recently been exploring collagraphs, using textured, incised cardboard plates and richly saturated inks to create works with striking depth. Produced in small limited editions, each print is entirely unique, with subtle variations ensuring no two are ever quite the same.
Hattie Lockhart Smith
Also exhibiting is Hattie Lockhart Smith, celebrated for her vibrant mixed media abstracts. Inspired by the Sussex landscape, her work combines painting and printmaking to bring colour, texture and energy into the home. Alongside her original pieces and limited edition prints, Hattie also runs welcoming, hands-on workshops across Sussex—ideal for anyone keen to explore their own creativity.
Shoreham Art Gallery can be found at 27 Brunswick Road, just a short stroll from the station. Visitors this month can also pick up a brochure for the upcoming Adur Art Trail in June, for which the gallery is proud to serve as this year’s hub.
